The AMT Auto Mag II is one of the most unique and recognizable rimfire pistols ever produced in the United States. Manufactured by Arcadia Machine & Tool (AMT) beginning in 1987, the pistol was chambered in the powerful .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR) cartridge, a round traditionally associated with rifles rather than semi-automatic handguns. At the time of its introduction, creating a reliable semi-automatic pistol that could function with .22 Magnum ammunition presented significant engineering challenges due to the cartridge's pressure characteristics and extraction issues. AMT addressed these problems with an innovative chamber design that incorporated a series of gas-relief ports around the chamber, allowing the pistol to cycle more reliably than many competing designs.
