Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Army Model 1860 represents the ultimate refinement of Samuel Colt’s cap-and-ball lineage, evolving directly from the massive .44-caliber Dragoon series and the frame architecture of the .36-caliber 1851 Navy. Introduced on the brink of the American Civil War, the pistol achieved its streamlined silhouette by utilizing a stepped frame and a rebated cylinder, a breakthrough made possible by Colt's stronger, newly adopted "Silver Spring Steel" alloy. While early production variants featured full-fluted cylinders and slim 7.5-inch barrels, Colt soon standardized the design to feature a robust 8-inch round barrel, a ratcheted "creeping" loading lever, and a smooth cylinder engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene. The frame configuration also evolved to maximize efficiency; early contract models utilized a four-screw frame for a detachable shoulder stock, but Colt soon transitioned to a simplified three-screw profile to cut costs for massive government contracts.

This new setup initially retained the recoil shield stock notches as the standard military profile, before ultimately phasing out the stock cuts entirely to produce completely smooth-framed variants for the massive government contracts of the late war. By the time production ceased in 1873 to make way for metallic cartridge firearms like the Single Action Army, Colt had manufactured over 200,000 units in the United States, alongside roughly 2,000 Hartford-made pistols proofed at the London agency. Celebrated for its exceptional power, superb pointability, and rugged reliability, the Model 1860 Army cemented its legacy as the definitive sidearm of Union forces.
