Following the commercial success of the full-sized Hardballer, Arcadia Machine & Tool (AMT) set out to build a lighter, more compact version for daily concealed carry. They did this by shortening the barrel and slide of the original platform down to 4 1/4 inches while maintaining a full-sized 1911 grip frame. Launched as the Skipper, this all-stainless-steel handgun became a pioneering milestone in the compact market. The pistol's history is divided into distinct manufacturing eras, beginning with an early, highly restricted introductory run out of El Monte, California, between 1978 and 1979. Following this initial release, the platform entered its main commercial production run throughout the 1980s, solidifying its presence in the market as a .45 ACP caliber handgun. The platform then evolved significantly in 1992 at the company's Irwindale, California, facilities. To capitalize on the massive popularity of the .40 S&W round (introduced by Smith & Wesson in 1990), engineers carefully re-engineered the gun's breech face, extractors, and single-stack magazines for the shorter, blunt-nosed caliber. These rare, late-production models also brought major cosmetic and functional upgrades, outfitting the .40 S&W variant with premium checkered wood medallion grips and Millett adjustable rear sights. Because these .40 S&W models were manufactured in small numbers just as AMT’s financial struggles forced a corporate transition to Irwindale Arms Incorporated (IAI), they are highly prized today as unique, investment-grade collector's pieces.
