Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Third Generation Signature Series black-powder reproduction of the legendary 1860 Army was introduced in 1994, marking a distinct and highly debated chapter in the modern history of this classic design. In 1993, Lou Imperato and his son, Anthony, established the Colt Blackpowder Arms Company of Brooklyn, New York, specifically to manufacture this lineup. Under a strict licensing agreement with Colt, this independent entity assumed full responsibility for quality control, inspection, marketing, advertising, sales, shipping, and distribution of the 3rd Generation Blackpowder revolvers. Because of this agreement—and unlike Second Generation revolvers, which were finished and shipped directly from Colt—Colt did not process these revolvers through their own facility; however, they maintained a promotional connection via the official Colt website. While the 1860 Army stood out as a cornerstone of third-generation revolvers, manufacturing of the entire series ultimately ended in 2002. True to its 19th-century heritage, the standard 1860 model retained the traditional open-top frame, 8-inch round barrel, and rebated six-shot cylinder. Though raw parts were cast in Italy by Uberti, they were fully assembled and hand-finished in the United States using proprietary Colt formulas for bluing and color-case hardening.

Because these revolvers bore only Colt markings and completely omitted Italian import or proof marks, they were legally regarded by the Blue Book of Gun Values as authentic Colt pistols. Enthusiasts were treated to a highly recognizable visual update, as nearly every variation within this run proudly bore a facsimile of Sam Colt's signature engraved directly onto the backstrap. These reproductions beautifully captured the elegant lines and balanced proportions of the original Civil War-era sidearm while offering the quality craftsmanship demanded by late 20th-century black-powder collectors and shooters alike.
