Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Designed by John Moses Browning as a direct evolution of the pioneering Model 1900, the Colt Model 1902 Military represents one of the most significant stepping stones in early automatic handgun development. Engineered to meet the demanding requirements of US Army Ordnance trials, the Model 1902 Military introduced an extended square-butt grip frame accommodating an 8-round magazine, a lower lanyard ring swivel, a 6-inch barrel with a parallel double-link locking system, and an automatic slide hold-open mechanism upon firing the last round. Manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut, between 1902 and 1928, only approximately 18,000 Model 1902 Military pistols were ever produced. Early turn-of-the-century production examples—featuring forward-slide serrations and hand-finished, high-gloss bluing—hold immense historical importance as the direct engineering predecessors of the legendary M1911.
This historic, investment-grade turn-of-the-century example, serial number 15877, is an authentic Colt Model 1902 Military manufactured in Hartford in 1906. Chambered in .38 ACP, this early 6-inch autoloader features early-style forward slide serrations, a square-butt frame profile with a lower lanyard ring, a slide lock mechanism, and original checkered black hard rubber grips featuring the "COLT" banner and Rampant Colt motif. Preserved in clean, highly maintained antique condition with a rich, honest blue-gray patina, crisp barrel and slide rollmarks, tight mechanical lockup, and a bright bore, this 1906 Model 1902 Military offers early automatic pistol purists and Colt collectors a premier piece of American firearms heritage.
