The Colt AR-15 A2 HBAR Sporter is a civilian semi-automatic rifle that represents one of the most recognizable commercial evolutions of the AR-15 platform during the 1980s and early 1990s, blending the appearance and handling of the military M16A2 with features tailored for sporting, target shooting, and civilian ownership. Manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company, the rifle was chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO/.223 Remington and used the traditional direct-impingement gas-operating system originally developed by Eugene Stoner. The “HBAR” designation stands for “Heavy Barrel,” referring to the rifle’s thick-profile barrel designed to improve rigidity, reduce barrel heating during extended firing sessions, and enhance practical accuracy compared to the thinner government-profile barrels found on military rifles. Most A2 HBAR Sporter rifles featured a 20-inch barrel with a 1:7 or 1:9 twist rate, depending on production period, allowing effective stabilization of a broad range of bullet weights. The rifle incorporated many hallmark M16A2-style features, including a fixed carry handle with fully adjustable rear sights, a forward assist, a brass deflector, and an A2-style polymer stock, pistol grip, and handguards. However, unlike military select-fire rifles, the AR-15 A2 HBAR Sporter operated strictly in semi-automatic mode for civilian sale.
