The 1976 Colt SP1 is one of the most desirable civilian AR-15 rifles ever produced, representing the golden era of Colt's commercial production and the direct descendant of the U.S. military's M16 rifle. Manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company, the SP1 is chambered in .223 Remington (5.56x45mm) and features the lightweight 20-inch pencil barrel, slick-side upper receiver without a forward assist, slab-side lower receiver, triangular handguards, fixed A1-style sights, and the original buttstock with trap door compartment. By 1976, the SP1 had adopted several M16A1 improvements, including a chrome-lined barrel and chamber and the enclosed birdcage flash suppressor, while retaining its distinctive civilian configuration without the forward assist or magazine fence.
