Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt 4th Model Derringer is a distinctive, single-shot pocket pistol manufactured for Colt by Butler Firearms of New Haven, Connecticut, as part of their initial production run between 1959 and 1963. This line paid direct homage to the elegant concealed-carry arms of the 19th century—specifically the historic .41 rimfire Colt 3rd Model "Thuer" design. Chambered in the diminutive .22 Short cartridge, this model was introduced at the absolute peak of America's mid-century television Western craze. Mechanically, the firearm relies on elegant simplicity; rather than utilizing a break-open action, it features a traditional side-swing barrel that pivots to the right when the hammer is placed on half-cock, engaging a mechanical extractor to partially lift the spent shell casing for manual removal. Visually, it stands out with a striking two-tone presentation, combining a gold-plated Zamak zinc-alloy cast frame with a matching unlined zinc-alloy barrel finished in a dark black oxide coating, all beautifully complemented by smooth walnut wood grips. Small, light, and easily concealed, it was never intended as a primary defensive sidearm, but rather as a nostalgic novelty shooter and a decorative piece of mid-century Colt history.
