The Colt MK IV Series 80 Government Model is one of the most recognizable modern Colt 1911 variants and represents a major evolution of the classic Government Model design. Introduced in 1983, the Series 80 replaced the earlier Series 70 by adding Colt’s Series 80 firing pin safety system, an internal safety mechanism designed to prevent the pistol from firing if dropped. Externally, it retained the traditional 1911 appearance with a 5-inch barrel, single-action trigger system, thumb safety, grip safety, and steel frame construction. Chambered primarily in .45 ACP (with some variants produced in calibers such as 9mm and .38 Super), the MK IV Series 80 Government Model became a popular choice for defensive use, competition, and general shooting. It maintained Colt’s classic forged-steel 1911 layout while incorporating updated safety features. Early Series 80 pistols from the 1980s are especially interesting to collectors because they represent Colt’s transition from the older Series 70 era into modern production.
