The Colt Model 1878 Double Action “Frontier” is a large-frame, late 19th-century revolver produced by Colt from 1878 to 1907, designed by William Mason and Charles Richards as Colt’s heavier, more powerful follow-up to the earlier Model 1877. It is a double-action/single-action swing-out cylinder revolver (by trigger and hammer control, not modern swing-out like later Colts) chambered most commonly in .45 Colt, but also produced in calibers like .44-40 Winchester, .38-40, .41 Colt, and others depending on contract and export market. Mechanically, it uses a complex internal linkage double-action system, allowing the shooter to either cock the hammer manually or fire by a full trigger pull. The design is built on a large, solid frame with a 6-shot cylinder, fixed barrel, and loading gate on the right side for single cartridges. Barrel lengths were offered in 4¾", 5½", and 7½" configurations, with some rarer short and export variations. The revolver shares visual styling cues with the Single Action Army but is mechanically unrelated inside, and it was intended to offer faster firing capability for mounted and frontier use, hence the “Frontier” designation. In total, approximately 51,000 units were produced across all variants during its production run, with several sub-variants including military contracts and enlarged-trigger-guard “Constabulary/Alaskan” style models.
