Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Signature Series 1861 Navy 3rd Generation “Custer Edition” is a finely crafted commemorative revolver produced by Colt Blackpowder Arms Co. between approximately 1996 and 2002. Chambered in .36 caliber and built on the elegant 1861 Navy pattern, it faithfully reflects the design and handling characteristics of the original Civil War-era revolvers. Featuring a 7 ½-inch round barrel, blued finish, and traditional percussion ignition system, it retains period-correct elements such as a round blade front sight and a V-notch rear sight integral to the hammer. Authentic Colt-style markings are present throughout, including the “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” barrel inscription and “COLT’S PATENT” on the frame, along with matching serial numbers and a Sam Colt signature on the backstrap, confirming its place within the desirable Signature Series line.

What truly distinguishes this revolver is its commemorative “Custer Edition” status and its extensive factory embellishments. The piece features detailed Nimschke/New York-style scroll engraving across the barrel, cylinder, frame, hammer, and grip frame, complemented by a contrasting grip configuration with checkering on one side and a carved American eagle motif on the other. Produced in limited quantities and inspired by the revolvers associated with Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, this example carries both historical appeal and strong collector interest. The combination of its limited production, high level of factory engraving, Signature Series pedigree, and historical association makes it a highly desirable firearm among collectors and enthusiasts of Colt black powder revolvers.
