Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in 1938 as the ultimate competitive evolution of John Browning's famous target handgun architecture, the 1st Series Colt Woodsman Match Target—famously dubbed the "Bullseye"—stands among the finest precision rimfire handguns ever crafted in Hartford. With its distinctive 6 5/8-inch heavy slab-sided barrel, deep factory bluing, intricate target sight system, and iconic bullseye logo engraving, the Match Target was engineered for unmatched match-grade performance. A hallmark of these early pre-war first-series models is the spectacular wrap-around checkered walnut target grips, colloquially known to collectors as "Elephant Ear" grips due to their extended flared base design. Discontinued during World War II, these pre-war Bullseye Woodsman pistols represent a golden era of American craftsmanship and remain premier centerpieces for serious Colt and C&R firearms collectors.
This specific example is an authentic pre-war 1st Series Colt Woodsman Match Target "Bullseye" pistol chambered in .22 LR, bearing serial number MT3751. Finished in traditional factory bluing, it features a 6 5/8-inch heavy target barrel with the iconic "MATCH TARGET" bullseye stamp, adjustable target sights, crisp frame roll marks, and original checkered walnut "Elephant Ear" wrap-around target grips with inlaid silver Rampant Colt medallions. The factory blued finish exhibits light, honest surface character, displaying smooth slide flats and well-preserved metal stampings. Mechanically, the single-action blowback mechanism cycles with glass-smooth precision; the trigger pull is crisp, and the 6.5-inch heavy barrel bore is mirror-bright with razor-sharp rifling. Complete with one (1) original factory steel magazine correctly stamped "MATCH TARGET MOD." at the base, this Woodsman Bullseye represents an exceptionally desirable C&R collector piece.
Return Policy:
We gladly offer a 3-day unfired inspection policy from the time that the firearm is delivered to your FFL. Refunds are available for all qualifying orders.
