Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Coonan Model B is a distinctive and powerful semi-automatic pistol that combines the classic ergonomics and operation of the 1911 platform with the high-velocity .357 Magnum cartridge, making it one of the few successful attempts to chamber a traditional semi-automatic handgun in a revolver cartridge. Originally developed in the late 1970s and produced by Coonan Inc., the Model B operates on a single-action, short-recoil system similar in principle to the M1911, but it is not simply a converted 1911—rather, it is a purpose-built design scaled and engineered to handle the longer, rimmed .357 Magnum round. The pistol features a stainless steel frame and slide, typically with a 5-inch barrel, and feeds from a detachable magazine that accommodates the cartridge's unique geometry, often holding around 7 rounds. One of the major engineering challenges addressed in the Model B is reliable feeding of rimmed ammunition in a box magazine, which Coonan solved through careful magazine design and feed geometry. 
 
The pistol retains familiar 1911-style controls, including a frame-mounted thumb safety, slide stop, and a crisp single-action trigger, making it intuitive for shooters already accustomed to that platform. In terms of performance, the Model B delivers impressive ballistic power and velocity compared to most semi-automatic pistols, with recoil that is strong but generally more linear and controllable than that of a comparable .357 Magnum revolver due to the reciprocating slide absorbing some of the energy. Some versions were also supplied with a lighter recoil spring to allow reliable function with .38 Special ammunition, adding a degree of versatility. Though production was intermittent and relatively limited, the Coonan Model B has earned a cult following among enthusiasts for its unique design, impressive power, and the successful blending of revolver-cartridge performance with semi-automatic pistol operation, making it a rare and innovative firearm in the handgun world.
