Born out of necessity during the late 1960s, the PSL was developed by Romania after the Soviet Union refused to share the technical data for the SVD Dragunov following Romania's refusal to participate in the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Consequently, Romanian engineers brilliantly adapted the RPK light machine gun design to create a dedicated marksman rifle that looked and functioned like a Dragunov but utilizes the ultra-reliable long-stroke piston of an AK. This designated marksman rifle is defined by its robust 24 1/2" chrome-lined barrel, featuring a 1:10 twist rate designed to stabilize heavy projectiles and capped with a signature muzzle brake to tame the substantial recoil of the full-powered cartridge. Adorned in a traditional blue finish, the rifle uses a rugged gas-piston system that mirrors the legendary reliability of the AK platform, but on a significantly larger frame. Throughout its history, the PSL served as the primary "reach out and touch" tool for Romanian infantry squads and saw extensive combat in global conflicts from the Middle East to Africa.
Its sighting system offers a versatile dual-layer approach: a classic winged protected post front sight paired with an adjustable tangent rear iron sight, complemented by the authentic military-surplus LPS 4x6 TIP2 telescopic sight for precision at distance. The rifle's aesthetic and ergonomic character is completed by its distinctive furniture, consisting of a laminated thumbhole wood buttstock with an integrated cheek weld and matching laminated wood handguards, which provide the structural rigidity and classic Eastern Bloc styling that collectors and shooters highly prize.
