Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Dan Wesson W-12 / Model 12 Service DA is an important early revolver from the first generation of Dan Wesson production. Introduced around 1970, the Model 12 was one of the company’s original .357 Magnum double-action revolvers and helped establish the design features that later made Dan Wesson famous. Its most notable feature was the interchangeable barrel system, using a separate barrel tube and shroud secured by a visible external muzzle nut. This allowed the owner to change barrel lengths and also set the barrel-cylinder gap, giving the revolver a level of adjustability that was highly unusual for the period. The W-12 is especially interesting to collectors because it predates the more familiar later Model 15 and 15-2 revolvers. These early guns used what collectors commonly call the “pork chop” barrel shroud, named for the large extended shroud shape that mates against the front of the frame. 
 
The Model 12 was the adjustable-sight version, while the related Model 11 was the fixed-sight version. Because the early W-12 design was only produced for a short period before Dan Wesson moved to the refined Model 14 and Model 15 series, surviving examples have a distinct first-production appeal. As a collectible revolver, the Dan Wesson Model 12 represents the beginning of one of the most innovative American revolver lines of the modern era. It may not have the same mainstream name recognition as a Colt Python or Smith & Wesson Model 27, but among knowledgeable revolver collectors, the early W-12 is appreciated for its rarity, engineering significance, and connection to Daniel B. Wesson II’s original vision. A Model 12 Service DA is not just another .357 Magnum revolver; it is an early example of the interchangeable-barrel Dan Wesson system and a key piece in the company’s history.
