Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The DoubleTap Defense DoubleTap is one of the most unconventional modern concealed-carry handguns, a minimalist two-shot pistol designed with extreme simplicity, compactness, and deep concealability as its primary goals. Developed by designer Ray Kohout and marketed by DoubleTap Defense LLC beginning in the early 2010s, the DoubleTap is essentially a modern reinterpretation of the classic derringer, but executed with contemporary materials and engineering. Chambered in either 9×19mm or .45 ACP, the pistol features a break-action, double-barrel design with two vertically stacked barrels, each holding a single round, and fires them sequentially with separate trigger pulls rather than simultaneously to comply with federal law. What makes the DoubleTap particularly notable is its extreme thinness and light weight—measuring roughly 0.67 inches wide and weighing under a pound—making it one of the smallest and most easily concealable centerfire pistols ever produced, often marketed as a backup or last-ditch defensive weapon rather than a primary sidearm. The pistol is built using aerospace-style manufacturing techniques, with frames available in aluminum or titanium alloys, which contribute to both its durability and very low weight. Instead of a traditional magazine, the DoubleTap uses a proprietary loading system resembling a speedloader that inserts two rounds into the chambers, while the grip cleverly stores two additional spare cartridges, giving the user a total of four rounds on hand. The internal mechanism is striker-fired with a double-action trigger, and the gun incorporates features like an ambidextrous opening latch and optional ported barrels to help mitigate recoil—though, due to its extremely small size and light weight, recoil is often described as sharp and difficult to manage, especially in .45 ACP. Conceptually, the DoubleTap is built around the defensive-shooting principle implied by its name: delivering two rapid, decisive shots (“double tap”) in an emergency. In practical terms, however, it occupies a very niche role in the firearms world—valued more for its novelty, extreme concealability, and engineering uniqueness than for high capacity or shootability—making it a fascinating modern example of how far the derringer concept can be pushed using modern materials and design philosophy.
