Originally adopted by the Royal Italian Army in 1897, the Carcano Moschetto per Truppe Speciali (Special Troops Carbine, or Modello 91 T.S.) was designed specifically for military personnel whose primary duty was not frontline infantry riflemen—including artillery crews, machine gun squads, combat engineers, and signaling detachments. Built around the robust Carcano bolt-action system designed by Salvatore Carcano at the Turin Army Arsenal, the T.S. carbine utilized an internal box magazine fed by 6-round Mannlicher-style en-bloc clips. Unlike the Cavalleria variant w/ its folding spike bayonet, the Mod. 91 T.S. featured a standard barrel lug to mount a traditional removable bayonet, paired w/ a shortened 17.7-inch barrel and full wood stock nose cap. Manufactured primarily across state facilities including Fabbrica d'Armi di Terni and Brescia, the T.S. carbines saw continuous, hard-fought service across World War I, the Interwar colonial conflicts, and throughout World War II.
