Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Fegyver és Gázkészülékgyár (FÉG) SMC-380 is a compact Hungarian-made semi-automatic pistol developed as an export-oriented evolution of the Walther PPK design and imported into the United States from approximately 1986 to 2000. Chambered in .380 ACP, it features a 3.4-inch fixed barrel and operates on a straight-blowback system paired with a traditional double-action/single-action trigger mechanism, combining the mechanical simplicity and inherent accuracy typical of fixed-barrel pistols. Measuring approximately 6.5 inches overall, the SMC-380 was designed for discreet carry and incorporates a lightweight black anodized aluminum-alloy frame—often described as an aluminum-titanium alloy frame—paired with a blued steel slide, helping reduce weight while maintaining durability. The pistol feeds from a 6-round detachable magazine and retains hallmark Walther-style features such as a slide-mounted safety/decocker and a straightforward takedown procedure, while FÉG engineers introduced subtle refinements of their own, including distinctive left-side thumb-rest grip panels found on many imported examples. As the export counterpart to the Hungarian APK9, the SMC-380 earned a reputation as a well-made and affordable alternative to traditional Walther-pattern pistols, offering solid construction, practical concealability, and distinctive import-era appeal.
