Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Forehand Arms Company traces its origins to the earlier firm of Ethan Allen, whose business was taken over after his death in 1871 by his sons-in-law, Sullivan Forehand and Henry C. Wadsworth, forming Forehand & Wadsworth in Worcester, Massachusetts. The firm built its reputation producing a range of black powder and early cartridge firearms, most notably British Bulldog–style revolvers, along with compact pocket revolvers, derringers, rifles, and both single- and double-barrel shotguns, largely aimed at the civilian self-defense and general utility market of the late 19th century. These arms were known for being practical, affordable, and widely accessible, reflecting the company’s focus on everyday use rather than high-end or military contracts. After Wadsworth retired in 1890, the firm continued as the Forehand Arms Company. Following Sullivan Forehand’s death in 1898, it was briefly operated by his sons before being sold in 1902 to Hopkins & Allen, bringing Forehand Arms Company to an end. However, it remained recognized for producing affordable, practical firearms throughout its history.
