Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Based on our research, this French-made flintlock pistol, marked “A. Borde, Jeune à Paris,” dates from the late 18th to early 19th century (circa 1780–1820) and exemplifies Parisian gunsmithing from a period of significant political upheaval, likely spanning the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era. While specific records for “A. Borde Jeune” are scarce, the signature suggests a specialized gunsmith who used “Jeune” (the younger) to distinguish himself from an elder family member, a common practice among French artisans of the time. The pistol’s design and finish reflect the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities typical of urban French arms makers during this era.

The pistol features a 5 ¼-inch blued barrel, smooth wooden stock with a metal grip end, and a flintlock action designed for black powder. Its markings include the signature “A. Borde, Jeune à Paris” on the right side of the action and faint decorative engravings along the top of the barrel, highlighting the subtle artistry incorporated into functional weaponry of the period. Though the caliber remains unknown, the overall construction and detailing demonstrate a combination of utility and refinement, making it a notable example of late 18th- to early 19th-century French flintlock pistols.
