Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Renowned among benchrest competitors and precision varmint hunters for their surgical accuracy and extraordinary craftsmanship, Cooper Firearms of Montana built an undeniable reputation for hand-fitting rifles that effortlessly deliver one-hole groups. Built on their specialized solid-bottom single-shot Model 38 platform, this custom rifle represents the pinnacle of rigid bolt-action architecture, eliminating magazine cutouts entirely to maximize receiver stiffness and eliminate harmonic flex. Most remarkably, this rifle is chambered in Cooper’s proprietary cartridge: the .22 Cooper Centerfire Magnum (.22 CCM). Engineered specifically by Dan Cooper in the 1990s as the ultimate reloadable replacement for the .22 Winchester Rimfire Magnum, the .22 CCM propels lightweight varmint projectiles with devastating flat trajectories, exceptional barrel efficiency, and centerfire handloading versatility. Stocked in a breathtaking piece of exhibition Claro walnut featuring dramatic fiddleback figure, fine cut checkering, and an ergonomic rollover Monte Carlo comb, this M38 stands as a premier showcase of American custom rifle building.
This specific example is an authentic Cooper Arms Model 38 custom precision varmint rifle chambered in .22 CCM. It features a 24-inch match-grade stainless steel barrel with a precision target crown, hand-fitted solid-bottom M38 single-shot action, an adjustable match trigger, and an exquisite rollover walnut stock fitted with sling studs and a Pachmayr Decelerator pad. Mounted atop the blued receiver is a premium, Japanese-manufactured Pentax Lightseeker 3-11x riflescope known for its crystal-clear European-grade glass and low-light light transmission. The contrasting mirror-blued receiver and bead-blasted satin stainless barrel are in immaculate, near-mint condition, with 99%+ finish retention, flawless metal flats, and sharp factory stampings. The exhibition walnut stock displays vivid marblecake figure, sharp hand-cut checkering, and virtually zero handling marks under its satin finish. Mechanically, the three-lug bolt cycles with glass-like smoothness, lockup is rigid and dead-concentric, the match trigger breaks with a surgical, feather-light snap, and the 24-inch stainless bore is mirror-bright with razor-sharp match rifling throughout.
