Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this exceptionally rare and antique single-shot rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Greene Rifle Works Warner Patent Carbine.
The Greene Rifle Works Warner Patent Carbine is a rare and fascinating Civil War–era breech–loading firearm, manufactured under U.S. Ordnance contracts in early 1865 as part of a limited batch of approximately 2,500 carbines produced by Greene Rifle Works in Worcester, Massachusetts, to fulfill James Warner’s government order. This distinctive single–shot rimfire carbine is prized by collectors for its unusual hinged breechblock design, brass frame, and direct connection to wartime innovation and government procurement, making it a standout piece of 19th-century American military firearms history.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Greene Rifle Works Warner Patent single-shot rifle represents an important chapter in 19th-century American firearms development, reflecting the experimental spirit of the post–Civil War era. Built around the Warner patent action, the rifle was designed as a strong and mechanically innovative single-shot platform at a time when inventors were seeking improvements in strength, simplicity, and safety. Greene Rifle Works’ execution emphasized solid construction and precise machining, making the rifle suitable for sporting, target shooting, and frontier use. The Warner patent mechanism itself illustrates the period’s transition from earlier percussion and muzzleloading systems toward more refined metallic-cartridge firearms.

From a historical and collector’s standpoint, these rifles are valued less for widespread military or commercial adoption and more for their rarity and technical significance. Surviving examples highlight the craftsmanship of small American arms makers and the diversity of action designs competing before repeating rifles became dominant. Collectors and historians often view the Greene Rifle Works Warner Patent rifle as a tangible example of innovation driven by independent inventors, with its appeal rooted in mechanical curiosity, scarcity, and its place in the evolutionary timeline of American single-shot rifles.
