The HK45 is an improved version of the USP45, which has received great acclaim since its release in 1995. The HK45 features some user-driven enhancements such as customizable backstraps, a Picatinny MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail, improved ergonomics, and more ambidextrous controls. The HK45 was developed together with the HK45 Compact as a potential contender for the Joint Combat Pistol (JCP) and Combat Pistol (CP) programs initiated by the United States military. These programs aimed to find a new service handgun to replace the M9 9-millimeter. However, these programs were ultimately terminated before a final decision was made, and no pistols were selected.
The HK45 utilizes a proprietary O-ring barrel to ensure precise barrel-to-slide lockup and optimal accuracy. The barrels are crafted using the renowned HK cold-hammer forging process to deliver superior performance. The HK45 firearm is equipped with a unique internal mechanical recoil reduction system that reduces the recoil forces by up to 30%. This feature improves the shooter's control during rapid firing and increases the component service life. The firearm can fire standard .45 ACP balls through +P ammunition and combines the accuracy, modularity, reliability, and minimum 20,000 round-service life of the famous USP45 series. Additionally, the HK45 has improved the ergonomics of the P2000 series pistols. It can also be fitted with threaded barrels for use with muzzle-mounted sound suppressors.
Each HK45 comes with an extra backstrap, and interchangeable medium and small backstraps to fit most shooters’ hands and complement the ergonomic grip. An improved control lever, combining safety and decocking functions, is mounted on the frame of HK45. The lever is easy to access and has a positive stop, returning to the "fire" position after decocking.
The HK45 pistol employs the modular approach to the internal components, which was first introduced by HK on the USP. This design enables the control lever function to be swapped from the left to the right side of the pistol, making it convenient for left-handed shooters. However, additional parts are required to make the switch. The control levers provide essential safety and/or decocking functions and can be easily fitted to the pistol by changing parts. Moreover, if needed, a control lever can also be mounted on both sides of the pistol for actual ambidextrous use. The HK45 is an ideal choice for personal defense use. It comes in various variants that offer different trigger firing modes like double action/single action (DA/SA) and double action only (DAO). The DAO mode uses a unique firing system called Heckler & Koch LEM (Law Enforcement Modification) to enhance the double action trigger pull.
