Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Sweden obtained a license to manufacture the Pistol m/1907—a domestic variant of the FN Model 1903 chambered in 9x20mm Browning Long—and began production in 1917 at the Husqvarna Vapenfabriks Aktiebolag factory to meet both military and civilian demand. Between 1917 and 1942, Husqvarna produced approximately 89,230 pistols under military contracts, with total production reaching nearly 94,000 units when including spare frame assemblies and civilian models designated as the Automobilpistol No. 500. Early examples featured slide markings such as “Browning’s Patent” or “System Browning,” but this practice was phased out after World War I due to trademark pressure from FN, which held exclusive European marketing rights to John Browning’s name. Officially adopted as the Pistol m/07, the firearm served as Sweden’s primary military sidearm until 1940, when it was succeeded by the Husqvarna Pistol m/40—a domestically produced version of the Finnish Lahti L-35. However, the m/07 remained in service as a substitute standard, which proved vital in the 1980s when a critical safety crisis emerged: the standard-issue, high-pressure 9×19mm m/39B submachine gun cartridge began causing catastrophic frame and bolt cracks in the m/40 Lahti pistols. Because the m/40 had to be abruptly pulled from service, the military reissued the older, ultra-reliable m/07 from deep storage as an emergency stopgap, firing its own lower-pressure ammunition safely until deliveries of the new Glock 17 (designated Pistol m/88) were finalized.

Beyond domestic use, Husqvarna’s production included international contracts, most notably a specialized run for Colombia in the 1930s after FN declined to resume production of the legacy design. Decades later, during the 1950s and 1960s, large quantities of surplus Husqvarna pistols were imported into the United States, where importers modified the vast majority of these to fire the readily available .380 ACP (9x17mm) cartridge by inserting a permanent spacer sleeve into the chamber and stamping “CAL .380” on the frame. Today, the combination of mechanical elegance, robust blowback construction, and a fascinating operational lifecycle makes the Husqvarna m/1907 a highly respected and sought-after collectible among military surplus enthusiasts.
