The Ithaca 1911 is a historically significant variant of the U.S. military’s standard-issue M1911A1 pistol, produced during World War II by Ithaca Gun Company as part of the wartime effort to supply sidearms to American forces. Originally designed by John Moses Browning, the M1911 platform had already proven itself as a rugged and effective semi-automatic pistol chambered in .45 ACP, and Ithaca was one of several manufacturers contracted to produce these pistols alongside companies like Colt and Remington Rand. Ithaca’s production began in 1943 and continued through 1945, with approximately 335,000 pistols manufactured, making them a substantial but still somewhat less common wartime producer compared to some counterparts. Built to military specifications, the Ithaca 1911A1 features a 5-inch barrel, single-action trigger, and a seven-round detachable magazine, along with hallmark A1 improvements such as a shorter trigger, arched mainspring housing, improved sights, and a frame with relief cuts behind the trigger for better ergonomics.
