The IWI Tavor SAR in .223 / 5.56 NATO is a semi-automatic bullpup rifle introduced to the U.S. market around 2013–2014, based on Israel Weapon Industries’ military TAR-21 platform. It uses a long-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt, designed for high reliability in harsh environments by keeping fouling out of the receiver compared to direct-impingement AR-15 systems. Chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO (and commonly marked or compatible with .223 Remington depending on barrel marking), the SAR typically features a 16.5-inch barrel housed inside a compact bullpup chassis, giving it an overall length of roughly 26 inches, similar to a short carbine while maintaining full rifle ballistics. Standard configuration includes a full-length top Picatinny rail for optics, integrated folding backup iron sights, AR-15 magazine compatibility (STANAG), and a reinforced polymer body shell. The design shifts the action and magazine behind the trigger, producing a rear-weighted balance that makes it compact and maneuverable, especially in tight spaces.
