Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M91/30 produced at the Izhevsk arms factory is the most prolific variant of one of the most mass-produced military rifles in history, and it carries with it the full weight of Soviet industrial resolve through some of the most brutal years of the 20th century. Production of the M91/30 began in 1930 at factories including Izhevsk, and by the end of the war approximately 17.4 million M91/30 rifles had been produced. The Izhevsk factory, situated deep in the Ural Mountains far beyond the reach of German advances, became the backbone of Soviet small arms production when the war turned catastrophic in 1941 — its geographic position making it one of the few major manufacturing centers that never had to be evacuated or relocated. Izhevsk-produced rifles are identified by their distinctive factory marking, a triangle enclosing an arrow, stamped on the barrel shank alongside the year of manufacture and serial number. As a design, the M91/30 is a cock-on-open rotating bolt action rifle chambered in the 7.62x54mmR cartridge, with a five-round single-stack internal magazine fed by charger clips and an interrupter designed to manage the challenges of the rimmed cartridge stacking reliably. The rifle itself was a modernization of the original 1891 three-line rifle, trimming overall length somewhat while standardizing sights and production tolerances across factories, though wartime pressures — especially from 1941 onward — inevitably pushed finish quality downward as the imperative shifted from craftsmanship to sheer volume.

When the Soviet Union was invaded by Germany in 1941, the Mosin-Nagant became the standard issue weapon to Soviet troops, and the enormous demand for rifles resulted in the abandonment of the more sophisticated SVT-40 semi-automatic as a standard infantry weapon, with the M91/30 filling the gap as the basic Soviet longarm of the war. The Izhevsk rifles of the wartime years reflect this pressure directly — the machining is functional rather than refined, the stocks rougher than prewar examples, the metal finish more utilitarian — yet the fundamental action remained reliable enough to be pressed into some of the most savage fighting in recorded history, from the frozen steppe of Stalingrad to the forests of Kursk, and it served prominently in the brutal urban battles of the Eastern Front, making heroes of snipers like Vasily Zaitsev and Lyudmila Pavlichenko, with the PU-scoped sniper variant built on selected Izhevsk actions becoming one of the most effective precision weapons fielded by any army in the war.
