Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The J. Stevens Arms Company No. 35 Target Single Shot represents Stevens’ early-20th-century emphasis on affordable yet accurate target arms for competitive and recreational shooters. Produced during the pre–World War I period, generally circa 1906 to the mid-1910s, the No. 35 was designed as a precision single-shot .22 rimfire target firearm at a time when organized gallery shooting and indoor target matches were extremely popular in the United States. Stevens built its reputation on well-made rimfire target guns, and the No. 35 fit squarely into that tradition, offering shooters a simple, mechanically robust platform that emphasized consistency and deliberate marksmanship over rapid fire.

Mechanically, the No. 35 is characterized by its straightforward single-shot operation, solid steel construction, and carefully regulated sights intended for target use. Like many Stevens target models of the era, it featured a well-balanced profile, quality machining, and a trigger designed to support precision shooting. Though it lacked the complexity of later repeating or Olympic-grade target firearms, the No. 35 earned respect for its accuracy and reliability. Today, surviving examples are valued by collectors for their connection to America’s early target-shooting culture and for illustrating Stevens’ role in making precision rimfire shooting accessible during the formative years of competitive small-bore shooting.
