Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Kimber Pro Carry HD II is a high-end commander-size 1911 pistol that combines compact defensive carry dimensions with the refined fit, accuracy, and premium construction that made Kimber Manufacturing one of the most recognizable names in modern 1911 production. Built with a 4-inch barrel and full-size grip frame, the Pro Carry HD II was designed to offer an ideal balance between concealability and shootability, giving users a handgun that carried easier than a full Government Model while still maintaining excellent recoil control and handling characteristics. One of the defining features of the “HD” variant was its all-stainless-steel frame and slide construction, which added weight and durability to the pistol compared to lightweight alloy-frame carry pistols. Chambered most commonly in .45 ACP, the pistol also appeared in far less common calibers, including 9mm, .40 S&W, and the exceptionally rare .38 Super configuration. The .38 Super version has become especially desirable among collectors and enthusiasts because relatively few were produced compared to the overwhelmingly more common .45 ACP models, making original factory .38 Super Pro Carry HD II pistols difficult to locate on today’s market. Among 1911 enthusiasts, the .38 Super chambering developed something of a cult following due to its flat trajectory, high velocity, mild recoil, and long-standing popularity in competition shooting and custom 1911 builds. Owners and collectors often describe the commander-length .38 Super Pro Carry HD II as a “grail gun” because of how infrequently they appear for sale. Mechanically, the pistol utilized Kimber’s single-action Series II operating system with a match-grade trigger, beavertail grip safety, lowered and flared ejection port, extended thumb safety, full-length guide rod, and low-profile combat sights. The all-steel construction made the pistol exceptionally soft-shooting in .38 Super configuration, where the cartridge’s lighter recoil impulse, combined with the heavier frame, created extremely fast follow-up shots and excellent practical accuracy. Many shooters praised the .38 Super version for its smooth cycling and pleasant shooting characteristics, especially when compared to the sharper recoil of compact .45 ACP carry pistols. In practical use, the Pro Carry HD II earned a reputation for excellent ergonomics, crisp trigger quality, and refined aesthetics, with satin stainless finishes, checkered grips, and classic 1911 lines giving the pistol a distinctly upscale appearance. While Kimber pistols from certain production eras generated debate regarding quality control among enthusiasts, many owners of the Pro Carry HD II reported excellent reliability and strong long-term performance, particularly with newer-production examples. Today, the Kimber Pro Carry HD II in .38 Super is regarded as one of the more unusual and collectible commander-size Kimber pistols ever produced, admired for its rare chambering, excellent balance, classic stainless-steel construction, and combination of modern carry practicality with the timeless appeal of the 1911 platform.
