Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this historically paramount USMC presentation pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Kimber USMC Custom "THE BOSS" (Col. R.J. Coates / DET-1 Commander Presentation Model) with Serial Number #DET1-RJC0!
This Kimber Factory Letter documents a USMC Custom pistol, identified by the serial number DET1-RJC0. This specific firearm is chambered in .45 NDT (.45 ACP) and is configured with a 5-inch barrel, a Stainless finish, and Wood grips. According to the remarks, this example represents the first serialized firearm produced within its production model line, marking the official beginning of that model's manufacturing history. As with many inaugural examples, firearms bearing Serial Number One were retained within the personal collection of Leslie Edelman, founder and owner of Kimber. The document, signed by Edelman, states that the pistol was released from the Kimber Vault on February 6, 2026, and delivered to Bryant Ridge Co. in Liberty, Kentucky.
Although no official records exist for this specific prototype design, it can reasonably be inferred that this example was produced as a “Mock-Up”. In our research, we have not found any indications that this particular model was put into production whatsoever.

Markings: The left slide is roll-stamped "THE BOSS" behind Kimber script, and displays the Marine Corps General Officer diamond-and-stars insignia. The right side frame is engraved "COL R.J. COATES / CO MCSOCOM DET ONE", "U.S. MILITARY PROPERTY USMC", "KIMBER, YONKERS, NY U.S.A.", serial number "DET1-RJC0", and features the official MCSOCOM Detachment One unit crest. The barrel hood is stamped "cal. 45 NDT" over "P".

In 2003, the United States Marine Corps established USMC Detachment One (DET-1) under the leadership of Colonel Robert J. Coates—a historic military activation that laid the foundation for USMARSOC within USSOCOM. To arm this elite unit for Close Quarters Battle (CQB), Kimber was commissioned to develop the Interim Close Quarters Battle (ICQB) 1911 pistol, marking the first newly manufactured 1911 issued to a U.S. military combat force since World War II. To honor the commanding officer who spearheaded DET-1, Kimber created this premier presentation piece: **Serial Number DET1-RJC0**. Custom-designated for Colonel Coates ("RJC"), the pistol is roll-stamped on the slide with the title "THE BOSS" alongside general officer star insignias. The right frame features explicit historical military roll-stamps declaring COL R.J. COATES / CO MCSOCOM DET ONE and U.S. MILITARY PROPERTY USMC, framed by the official MCSOCOM Detachment One emblem. Preserved directly in the private executive vault of Kimber Owner & CEO Leslie Edelman, this factory-certified "Serial Number One / Inaugural Commander" release represents a piece of modern U.S. Marine Corps special operations history.
