Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Chilean Small Arms Commission approached Mauser to replace their aging French Gras and Belgian Comblain rifles, resulting in a massive order for over 80,000 rifles and carbines chambered in 7x57mm Mauser. These weapons, officially designated Mauser Chileno Modelo 1895, were initially produced by the Ludwig Loewe Company in Berlin, with production later continuing under Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) after a corporate restructuring in late 1896. The standard infantry rifles featured a 29.1-inch barrel, straight bolt handle, and full-length military stock, while the specialized short rifles (mosquetones) and cavalry carbines were fitted with shorter barrels and turned-down bolt handles to prevent snagging during mounted operations. Some of these robust weapons remained in secondary or ceremonial Chilean service for over half a century; during the 1950s and 1960s, thousands were officially converted to fire the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge to match modern logistics, marked with a distinctive "7.62 N" stamp directly on the receiver ring. The Model 1895 Chilean Mausers are universally renowned among collectors for their exceptional late-Victorian craftsmanship and deep blued finish.

Based heavily on the refined Spanish Model 1893 design, they featured a spring-loaded, cock-on-closing bolt action and introduced a prominent auxiliary safety lug at the rear of the bolt handle to prevent catastrophic failures under pressure. These rifles remain a significant chapter in military firearm history, reflecting the extensive Prussian influence on South American military modernization and the enduring legacy of the Mauser design.
