John Gillette (Classic Guns Inc.) was equally revered in the Colt collecting community for his masterful metal prep, period-correct refinishing, and action tuning on classic Single Action Army revolvers. Renowned for recreating the vivid, high-contrast bone-and-charcoal case hardening characteristic of early factory 1st Generation Colts, Gillette’s frame finishes featured deep, swirling hues of royal blue, purple, and amber. Master engravers frequently entrusted Gillette to perform the delicate prep work on Colt SAA frames prior to engraving—and the final case coloring and nitre-bluing afterward—knowing his meticulous hand-polishing preserved razor-sharp frame contours, patent dates, and factory roll marks without rounding edges or washing out stampings.
