The Mossberg Maverick 88 is a pump-action shotgun built on the same proven operating system as the Mossberg 500 series, using a dual action-bar design and rotating bolt lockup that contributes to its reliability and smooth cycling under a wide range of conditions. It is chambered in 12 or 20 gauge and typically features a 5+1 or 7+1 tubular magazine, depending on barrel length. The Maverick 88 uses a cross-bolt safety located on the trigger guard instead of the tang safety found on Mossberg 500 models, and it generally comes configured with a synthetic stock and forend for durability. Mechanically, it is very closely related to the Mossberg 500/590 family, sharing many internal parts and barrel compatibility, which makes it a straightforward and familiar platform for anyone experienced with pump shotguns.
