Universal acclaim surrounds "The Rifleman's Rifle," but among Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 collectors, few configurations evoke as much passion as an early Pre-War Magnum action rifle. Manufactured in New Haven, Connecticut before World War II altered production methods, Pre-War Model 70s represent the absolute pinnacle of Winchester’s hand-fitted assembly, featuring cloverleaf receiver tangs, hand-cut stock checkering, and smooth Mauser-style controlled-round feed claw extractors. Bearing serial number 14070, this exceptionally rare specimen was produced in 1938—the second full year of Model 70 production! It is chambered in the legendary, long-range British cartridge: the .300 H&H Magnum (bearing the period-correct early factory barrel roll-stamp 300 MAGNUM). Magnum-length actions required specialized receiver milling and magazine box fitting at the factory, making early pre-war .300 H&H examples exceedingly scarce compared to standard-length calibers. Equipped with a 26-inch Winchester Proof Steel barrel, original hooded front sight post, folding rear leaf sight, pre-war hand-checkered walnut stock, and red rubber recoil pad, this 1938 Model 70 remains in remarkable unmounted condition with factory fill screws in place along the receiver bridge. As one of the most holy-grail investment-grade bolt rifles in American collecting history, an early pre-war Model 70 in .300 H&H Magnum is a crown-jewel acquisition for any premier arms collection!
