Introduced in 1969, the Browning BL-22 developed a reputation as one of the most refined rimfire lever-action rifles of the modern era. Its signature engineering feature is an unusually short 33-degree lever arc, allowing the action to eject, cock and chamber with substantially less lever movement than a traditional lever rifle. Browning further engineered the trigger assembly to travel with the lever, eliminating the finger-pinching tendency associated with conventional fixed-trigger lever actions. Combined with an exposed hammer, tubular magazine, excellent balance and Miroku manufacture, the BL-22 has long represented the premium end of the sporting .22 lever-action market. Browning's 2003 125th Anniversary celebrated the company's history dating to 1878, and a small number of specially finished firearms were produced specifically for that milestone. This particular rifle rises well beyond an ordinary production BL-22. Factory numbered 016 of only 125, it wears a special high-grade commemorative configuration featuring extensively scroll-engraved receiver panels, contrasting polished blued steel, a gold-tone trigger, finely checkered high-gloss walnut and the prominent "125 Years BROWNING 1878-2003 / 016 of 125" factory marking applied directly to the buttstock. The accompanying September 11, 2003 Browning letter specifically states that the firearm was manufactured to commemorate the 125th Anniversary and describes it as a collectible "1 of 125" firearm.
