Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1917 Remington Armory Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant is a remarkable physical artifact of a chaotic turning point in global history, bridging the gap between American industrial might and the fall of Tsarist Russia. Beautifully stocked in rich American walnut rather than traditional Russian birch, this full-length infantry rifle retains the classic traits of the early three-line rifle, including the distinctively curved Konovalov rear sight graduated in archaic arshins and a smooth, straight-handled bolt action. Born out of a desperate World War I contract that was abruptly canceled by the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, these American-made Mauser-competitors were ultimately rescued by a U.S. government buyout to prevent Remington's financial ruin. Today, an intact, un-sporterized Remington M91 is highly coveted by military surplus collectors, serving as a tangible reminder of a time when American troops trained with—and occasionally fought in the frozen wastes of Siberia with—a Russian-designed firearm.
