The Remington 40X is a legendary American bolt-action precision rifle renowned for its exceptional accuracy, custom-shop craftsmanship, and long-standing reputation in competitive target shooting, military marksmanship, and precision rifle development. Manufactured by Remington Arms' Custom Shop beginning in the mid-1950s, the 40X was designed as a premium target rifle built to significantly higher standards than standard production sporting rifles, and it quickly became one of the most respected precision platforms ever produced in the United States. Based loosely on the proven Model 700 action but refined with tighter tolerances, hand-fitting, and match-grade components, the 40X was offered in both single-shot and repeater configurations and chambered in a wide variety of cartridges, including .22 Long Rifle, .222 Remington, .220 Swift, .308 Winchester, and other calibers suited for benchrest competition, smallbore target shooting, varmint hunting, and sniper applications.
