Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 722 is a classic American bolt-action sporting rifle produced by Remington Arms from 1948 to 1962, widely regarded as one of the most influential hunting rifles ever built because it served as the direct predecessor to the legendary Remington Model 700. Designed as an affordable yet highly accurate sporting rifle, the Model 722 utilized a modern cylindrical receiver and strong dual-opposed-lug bolt system that departed from the more expensive and complex manufacturing methods used on earlier sporting rifles. Chambered primarily for short-action cartridges such as .222 Remington, .257 Roberts, .300 Savage, and .244 Remington, the Model 722 became especially famous for its exceptional out-of-the-box accuracy and smooth operation at a price accessible to ordinary hunters. One of the defining characteristics of the Remington 722 is its simple but extremely strong action design, which featured a recessed bolt face that fully enclosed the cartridge head and a receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounting at a time when telescopic sights were rapidly becoming standard equipment for American hunters. The rifle typically featured a walnut stock with a slim sporting profile, a blind internal magazine without a floorplate, and a crisp adjustable trigger system that contributed heavily to the rifle’s reputation for precision shooting. Mechanically, the 722 used a push-feed bolt action with a short bolt lift and robust extractor system, creating a strong and reliable hunting rifle capable of excellent accuracy with factory ammunition. The Model 722 also played a major role in the success of the .222 Remington cartridge, with the rifle becoming legendary among varmint shooters for producing extremely tight groups and outstanding long-range performance on small game and predators.

In practical use, the Remington 722 earned a strong reputation among hunters and target shooters for its reliability, accuracy, and excellent value. Shooters frequently praised the rifle’s smooth cycling action, lightweight handling, and ability to consistently outperform many more expensive rifles on the range and in the field. The rifle’s strong action and precision manufacturing methods eventually evolved into the development of the Remington Model 700, which retained much of the same core engineering and went on to become one of the most successful bolt-action rifles in history. Although production of the 722 ended in the early 1960s, the rifle remained highly respected among experienced shooters and collectors who appreciated its historical importance and remarkable shooting qualities. Today, the Remington Model 722 is regarded as one of the foundational American bolt-action hunting rifles of the postwar era, admired for its accuracy, innovative action design, and lasting influence on modern sporting rifle development.
