Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Riverside Arms Company 12-gauge side-by-side was a classic, hardworking utility shotgun manufactured as a budget-friendly "house brand" by the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company between roughly 1915 and 1930. Mechanically based on robust designs like the internal-hammer Model 315 or the exposed-hammer Model 215, these guns were built on the exact same assembly lines in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, as standard Stevens models, offering the same reliable lock work but utilizing cost-saving cosmetics like unadorned receivers and stained beech or birch stocks instead of premium walnut. They were explicitly designed as everyday tools for rural farmers and working-class hunters who needed an affordable, indestructible firearm for pest control or putting meat on the table. If you own or are looking at one today, it is highly recommended to have a gunsmith inspect it before firing, as many of these vintage doubles were built with shorter chambers (often 2 9/16 inches) or steel types that cannot safely handle the high pressures of modern, heavy 12-gauge magnum or steel-shot ammunition.
