The Ruger Mini-14 is a lightweight, gas-operated semi-automatic rifle that has remained in continuous production since its introduction and stands as one of the most recognizable American-made sporting and working rifles of the modern era. In 1967, L. James Sullivan and William B. Ruger began the process of shrinking the venerable M14 7.62 service rifle into a more compact version chambered in .223 Remington, a project that took six years and culminated in 1973, with mass production beginning in 1974. The rifle employs an investment-cast, heat-treated receiver and a version of the Garand locking mechanism paired with a self-cleaning, short-stroke, fixed-piston gas system — a design philosophy that prioritized reliability and mechanical simplicity over the complexity found in many competing platforms.
