The Ruger Redhawk is a large-frame, double-action revolver introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 1979 (first shipped in 1980) and designed specifically for heavy-duty use with magnum revolver cartridges. It was originally engineered around the .44 Magnum, with later production expanding to include other chamberings such as .41 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .44 Special, and .45 Colt at different points in its production history. The Redhawk uses a solid-frame, no-sideplate construction, meaning the internal lockwork is accessed through the bottom of the frame, a design choice that increases rigidity compared to traditional sideplate revolvers. It operates in double-action/single-action (DA/SA) mode and uses a triple-locking cylinder system, where the cylinder locks at the front, rear, and bottom to increase strength and alignment under heavy recoil. Early production models featured stainless or blued finishes, with barrel lengths commonly offered in 4-inch, 5.5-inch, and 7.5-inch configurations, depending on caliber and production era. Over time, Ruger refined the design with changes to sights, ejector rod support, and internal geometry, and the platform remains in production in updated forms, including both standard Redhawk and Super Redhawk variants.
