Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Cobray M-11/Nine (often written M11/9) is a compact, blowback-operated 9×19mm semi-automatic pistol derived from Gordon Ingram’s original MAC-11/MAC-10 family of machine pistols, later produced and marketed in the 1980s–1990s by SWD/Cobray. Designed around a simple stamped-steel receiver and closed-bolt operation for civilian legality, it retains the boxy, utilitarian “submachine gun style” layout that made the MAC series famous, including a rectangular profile, top or side-mounted magazine system depending on configuration, and a very simple internal operating system built for low-cost mass production. The firearm typically uses a straight blowback action, fixed iron sights, and a threaded barrel on many variants, with optional accessories like folding stocks or foregrips available on carbine or registered configurations. Its defining traits are its extremely compact size, high magazine capacity (often 32 rounds in standard magazines), and very high cyclic rate in full-auto variants, which contributed to its reputation in both civilian gun culture and media portrayals during the 1980s and 1990s. While praised for affordability, durability, and ease of manufacture, it is also widely known for having limited ergonomics, heavy recoil impulse, and modest accuracy compared to more refined pistols, especially in its stock configuration. Today, the Cobray M11/Nine is viewed as an iconic example of the post-MAC civilian submachine gun era—valued by collectors and enthusiasts for its historical significance, distinctive appearance, and role in the evolution of American compact 9mm platforms.
