The Savage Model 23AA Sporter is a classic American bolt-action rifle produced by the Savage Arms Company from 1933 to 1942. Introduced as an improved version of the earlier Model 23A, it featured several mechanical enhancements, including a refined trigger, an upgraded safety mechanism, and a high-speed "Speed-Lock" bolt assembly. Unlike its predecessor's smooth stock, the Model 23AA also introduced functional checkering on the walnut pistol grip and forearm for improved handling. Designed primarily for small-game hunting and pest control, the Model 23AA was chambered for .22 Long Rifle cartridges, safely accommodating both regular and high-speed variations. Its 23-inch tapered barrel contributed to its renowned accuracy, while the polished bolt with double locking lugs and a recessed bolt face ensured exceptionally reliable operation. The rifle's distinct one-piece American walnut stock featured a full-curve pistol grip and an oil-finished coating, providing both field durability and aesthetic appeal. Fed by a standard 5-round detachable box magazine—with extended 10-round factory-compatible magazines also offered—the rifle came equipped with a dovetail blade front sight and an adjustable notch rear sight. Highly praised for its reliability and precision, the Model 23AA was a favored choice among hunters and target shooters of its era. Production ceased in 1942, coinciding with the United States' entry into World War II, which forced a mandatory shift in manufacturing priorities toward military contracts.
