The Savage Stevens Model 87D is a classic vintage rimfire rifle renowned for its unique dual-action design, historical appeal, and distinct cooling vents on the receiver, which earned it the collector nickname "Gill Gun." While its under-barrel tubular magazine can feed .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle (.22 LR) ammunition, its semi-automatic operation is functionally exclusive to high-pressure .22 LR cartridges. Because lower-power .22 Short and Long rounds lack the gas pressure to cycle the blowback assembly, the rifle is engineered with a unique adaptability mechanism allowing the shooter to push the knurled charging handle inward to lock the bolt, seamlessly converting the rifle into a manual bolt-action repeater. This mechanically fascinating operation is paired with a 24-inch barrel for enhanced accuracy, a smooth hardwood stock, a blade front sight, and an adjustable notch rear sight. Embodying the dependable, mid-century utility craftsmanship of Savage Arms, the Stevens Model 87D remains a highly functional piece of American rimfire history for target shooters and collectors alike.
