Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this ULTRA RARE semi-automatic rifle today for a penny-start auction; this is the Beretta BM-59 MK IV Nigerian Model!
The Beretta BM-59 Mk IV (Nigerian Model) is widely considered one of the rarest and most desirable production variants of the BM-59 family, particularly on the U.S. civilian market. Originally engineered as a heavy-barreled Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) to serve as a light machine gun replacement—featuring a heavy barrel profile, integrated wooden or polymer pistol grip stock, forward handgrip, and bipod—the Mk IV was produced in far smaller numbers by Beretta than standard Italian military Ital or Alpine configurations. Because the overwhelming majority of Mk IV production was supplied directly to military contract customers like Nigeria or produced locally under license by the Defense Industries Corporation in Kaduna, factory-original, pre-1989 semi-automatic import examples and original parts-kit builds in the United States remain exceptionally scarce, commanding significant collector premiums whenever they appear at auction.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Developed by Pietro Beretta as a specialized squad automatic weapon configuration of the BM59 platform, the BM59 Mk IV—commonly known as the Nigerian Model—was engineered as a heavy-duty light machine gun/BAR alternative. Built around the proven 7.62x51mm NATO Garand-derived action, the Mk IV was outfitted with a longer, heavy barrel profile, a fixed wooden buttstock with an integrated vertical pistol grip, a top-mounted carrying handle, an integrated folding bipod, and Beretta's signature tri-compensator muzzle device. This robust configuration gave squad automatic gunners maximum controllable firepower and thermal heat dissipation during sustained automatic fire. While the Italian military primarily adopted lighter infantry and folding-stock variants like the Ital, Alpini, and Paracadutisti, Beretta actively marketed the heavy Mk IV to international military clients. Nigeria selected this variant as a primary squad support weapon, eventually securing manufacturing licensing to produce the rifle domestically at the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) facility in Kaduna. Because production was concentrated on foreign government contracts rather than Italian military issue or commercial sales, factory original Mk IV rifles remain among the most distinct and limited military iterations of the entire BM59 family. On the U.S. civilian market, genuine Beretta BM59 Mk IV Nigerian Models represent an exceptional rarity for military arms collectors. Pre-1989 semi-automatic factory import examples brought in by importers like Springfield Armory or Reese Surplus are exceedingly difficult to find, as only a fraction of imported BM59s were configured in true Mk IV trim. Furthermore, original Nigerian-pattern wood stocks, heavy barrels, and handguard assemblies are notoriously scarce on the surplus parts market. Consequently, authentic Nigerian Model BM59s stand out as high-grade centerpiece collectibles that command a significant premium among advanced Cold War military rifle enthusiasts.
