Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Semmerling series of pistols consisted of several models, including the LM1, LM2 (.380 ACP semi-automatic variant), LM3, and LM4. Additionally, the XLM (.45 ACP semi-automatic variant) was developed as a military-specific model. Of these, the LM4 was the only model made available to the public. Designed and manufactured in the early 1980s, it was priced at US$645. The "LM" in the model names refers to "Lichtman Model", named after inventor Philip R. Lichtman, who secured at least four U.S. Patents for the design. A stainless steel version of the LM4, which was not part of the original Semmerling Corporation's production, became available through the American Derringer Corporation around 1995. The primary objective of the LM4 was to combine high firepower with a compact size, making it easily concealable. This was achieved by choosing the .45 ACP caliber for its proven stopping power and utilizing a manual repeating mechanism to reduce bulk and weight.

This design ensured reliability even under difficult conditions. Initially, the LM4 was offered to the U.S. Army and other government agencies, but it was not widely adopted. Notably, the Semmerling LM4 was extremely simple, consisting of only 33 parts (including screws). The original design specified that all parts, except the springs, be made from S-7 tool steel. Every unit was Magnafluxed (a method for detecting surface and subsurface flaws in ferrous metals) twice during its assembly process. Each LM4 pistol was essentially handmade to order, with production averaging just over ten pistols per month. In total, only 600 LM4 pistols were ever produced. Though the LM4 was intended primarily as a backup weapon for individuals at high risk of losing their primary firearm, it was also used by some as a "hide-out" weapon.

Capable of a "shot-a-second" firing rate, the LM4, with a chambered round and a fully loaded magazine, could carry four rounds of .45 ACP. In 2005, the most significant collection of Semmerling pistols—including the LM1, LM2, LM3, LM4, and XLM models, along with prototypes, tooling, blueprints, production and testing equipment, promotional materials, and accessories—was donated to the National Firearms Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution.
