Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Carbine is a distinctive Civil War–era firearm that reflects the rapid innovation taking place in American small-arms design during the 1860s. Designed by Christian Sharps and patented on July 9, 1861, the Model 1862 features a unique sliding breech action and was chambered for a .52 caliber rimfire cartridge. Manufactured in Philadelphia between 1862 and 1865, the total production is estimated at approximately 8,000 carbines. The design was intended to provide faster loading and improved reliability over traditional muzzleloaders, making it well-suited for military service during the war. Several variants of the Model 1862 were produced to meet different service requirements. The Navy type, the most common configuration, featured a 24-inch barrel covered in leather to protect the shooter’s hand from heat during sustained firing, with the U.S. Navy purchasing the majority of production. The Army type also used a 24-inch barrel but was blued rather than leather-covered and was made in much smaller numbers. A short cavalry version with a 19-inch blued barrel was produced for mounted troops. Today, the Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 is valued by collectors as an uncommon and mechanically interesting Civil War carbine, representing an important transitional step in the evolution of breech-loading military firearms.
