Rear sight leaf stamped "R.S. LAWRENCE / PATENTED / FEB 15TH 1859". Lockplate right side stamped "R.S. LAWRENCE PAT / APRIL 12TH 1859" & "C. SHARPS' PAT / OCT 5TH 1852". Receiver left side stamped "C. SHARPS' PAT / SEPT 12TH 1848".

Invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps, the Sharps breech-loading carbine was the single most famous percussion firearm issued to Union forces during the American Civil War. Celebrated for its fast, lever-actuated falling-block breech mechanism, the Sharps allowed Union cavalrymen to load and fire far more rapidly than soldiers carrying standard muzzle-loading shoulder arms. Firing a .52 caliber paper or linen cartridge ignited by a standard percussion cap, the New Model 1863 features a 22-inch round barrel, R.S. Lawrence patent folding ladder rear sight, single barrel band, and a side-mounted sling bar with ring for mounted carry. Bearing a C-prefix serial number stamped into the upper tang ("C, 2973"), this authentic Civil War-period cavalry short arm represents an iconic piece of 19th-century American military history.

This historic, highly authentic Civil War antique carbine, serial number C, 2973, is an original Sharps New Model 1863 manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut. Chambered in .52 caliber percussion, this carbine features a 22-inch round barrel, falling-block action, single barrel band, Lawrence ladder rear sight, sling bar with ring, and original American walnut stock. Preserved in honest antique condition throughout with a rich, smooth steel patina, clear patent and manufacturer stampings, smooth under-lever movement, solid hammer spring tension, positive lockup, and a dark, shootable bore with visible rifling. Offering verified Civil War cavalry heritage and iconic Christian Sharps design engineering, this New Model 1863 represents a cornerstone acquisition for antique military arms collectors.
