The SIG Sauer P228 is one of the most respected compact semi-automatic service pistols ever produced, developed in the late 1980s as a more compact version of the full-size P226. Chambered exclusively in 9×19mm Parabellum, the P228 operates on a short-recoil, locked-breech system and features a traditional double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger, frame-mounted decocking lever, aluminum alloy frame, and a 13-round double-stack magazine. Unlike the later P229, the P228 uses a stamped carbon-steel slide with a pinned breech block, giving it a lighter weight and balance that many SIG enthusiasts consider superior. In 1989, the U.S. military adopted the P228 as the M11, where it served with investigators, aviators, and numerous specialized units.
