The SIG Sauer P229 is one of the most respected compact service pistols ever produced and is essentially SIG Sauer’s answer to the demand for a smaller, stronger version of the full-size P226. Introduced in 1992, the P229 was designed primarily for law enforcement and military users who wanted a handgun that offered duty-level durability while being easier to carry than a full-size pistol. Unlike the earlier P228, which used a folded carbon steel slide, the P229 was built with a machined stainless steel slide, allowing it to safely handle higher-pressure cartridges such as .357 SIG and .40 S&W. It was also available in 9mm, giving shooters a compact pistol with the same legendary SIG reliability and accuracy. The P229 uses SIG’s proven DA/SA hammer-fired operating system, featuring a smooth double-action first pull, crisp single-action follow-up shots, and a decocking lever that safely lowers the hammer without needing a manual safety.
